Title: Quantum walk approach for simulating parton showers in high energy collisions
Abstract:
The simulation of collision events at the LHC requires extensive modelling with the theoretical descriptions of these collisions separated into several stages. The parton shower process evolving the system down in energy from the hard interaction to the hadronisation scale, O(ΛQCD), relies heavily on the performance of full event generators with their accuracy and speed in simulating complex multi-particle final states. However, the emergence of quantum computers has brought a new paradigm to the field of computation. The unique features of these devices being harnessed to provide innovative algorithmic designs seen to tackle a multitude of problems within HEP, including the processing and analysing data from collider experiments.
In this talk, I will present a general and novel quantum walk approach to simulating a parton shower on a quantum device. The algorithms utilise the quantum device’s ability to remain in a quantum state throughout the computation, and thus it may be seen how the quantum walk naturally lends itself as basic framework for the simulation of the parton shower process.
Within this framework, the algorithm can simulate a many-particle parton shower and shows a remarkable improvement on the number of shower steps that can be simulated in comparison to previous quantum algorithms. This will contribute to simulating a full and realistic high energy collision event on a quantum computer.
