The observed hierarchies in Yukawa couplings and the unique role of third-generation fermions, compared to the first two, suggest the need for a deeper explanation within Beyond Standard Model (BSM) theories. One of the most successful frameworks addressing this puzzle is the $U(2)^n$ flavour symmetry. In this talk, I will review the current status of BSM approaches to flavour hierarchies based on this symmetry, with a particular focus on low-energy phenomenology and recent measurements from the Belle II and NA62 collaborations.
