Description

Science advances not only through deeper theories, but through clearer ways of seeing them. I will discuss the use of interactive web-based tools to visualize the solutions to partial differential equations, and to discuss the value of such instantaneous and interactive solutions for communicating across diverse fields. I will show particular examples for communicating nontrivial lessons about how such models behave, including examples from work in pattern formation in biology and fluid mechanics. I will also showcase examples of soliton dynamics, quantum tunnelling, and Goldstone modes in condensed matter models (with an interesting exemplar of a broken time-reversal symmetry). While most of my work lies within theoretical biology and other areas far away from high-energy physics, which I know very little about, I am hopeful that the talk will provide a forum to discuss new perspectives, and to emphasise the value of communication amongst diverse viewpoints to improve the science that we do. Ultimately, this talk is an invitation to view communication itself as a tool for discovery, not merely dissemination.
