The Institute for Particle Physics Phenomenology (IPPP) at Durham University is hosting the first edition of the International Hands-On Particle Physics Masterclass on Thursday 22nd of March 2018. This is a one day event where 40 students from nearby schools will come to the IPPP to carry out a data analysis activity. The students will use real data from the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN.
During the morning there will be short lectures about particle physics, the LHC and how new particles are discovered. Afterwards, a buffet lunch will be provided, followed by the hands-on data analysis activity. The day will conclude with a live video-conference with other Masterclasses at other research centres around the world, and with CERN!
This activity lies within the International Hands-On Particle Physics Masterclass, which involves 215 institutions worldwide, and is coordinated by the International Particle Physics Outreach Group (IPPOG).
