John Womersley, 'THE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY FACILITIES COUNCIL'

Europe/London
Description
The Council was created on April 1, 2007 and is responsible for fundamental research in particle physics, nuclear physics, astronomy, and space, for the major UK facilities for the physical and life sciences (synchrotrons, light sources, lasers, and neutrons), national laboratories (at RAL, Daresbury, and UKATC) and international science projects (CERN, ESO, ESA, ILL, and ESRF). I will explain how STFC is developing its science and technology strategy: the goals of the council and how we can set priorities between very different projects, the role of the Science Board, the various Science Committees, and our in-house experts; identification of a set of key technologies, and interactions with the Technology Strategy Board, which facilities STFC is putting forward in the the RCUK Large Facilities Roadmap, and the potential for funding some of these projects through the Large Facilities Capital Fund. I will also explain the opportunities for research community and staff input into the strategy. I will also explain the impact of the current spending review on STFC and the steps that we are taking to come up with the best programme that we can within the financial constraints that we have been given.
