The horticulture industry is currently facing the challenge of feeding a growing world population with limited land resources. Furthermore, climate change is rendering traditional farming techniques and knowledge obsolete. As a result, the horticulture industry is starting to embrace the power of data and digital technologies to optimise production and sustainability.
In this context, I will introduce the concept of data-driven horticulture, and PlantTech, a New Zealand government-funded research institute that delivers artificial intelligence technology. for the horticulture industry. I will present a few case studies and discuss a few opportunities for students interested in projects in this field.
