Description

Theoretical uncertainties due to missing higher orders in QCD

Abstract: Constantly increasing accuracy of the experimental measurements at the Large Hadron Collider requires unprecedented precision of the theoretical calculations. The missing high-order corrections are becoming the limiting factor for the Standard Model tests. The problem of theoretical uncertainties needs to be rethought before the HL-LHC era begins. The traditionally used simple but ad hoc scale variation prescription has no probabilistic interpretation. One of the promising alternatives is the Bayesian approach to theoretical uncertainties introduced by Cacciari and Houdeau. I will discuss the pros and cons of the Bayesian approach, present recent developments, and illustrate it with some practical examples.
