Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I attend YTF?

YFT is open to all research students working in theoretical physics/applied maths. If you are a PhD student or doing a Masters degree by Research (MRes) in these areas, then you are welcome to YTF.

YTF is not open to those who have already finished their PhDs.

Please note that YTF does not reimburse travel and so do check with your university if they are happy for you to go so you can claim your travel expenses back from them!

Do I have to give a talk to attend?

No, you are absolutely welcome to attend without giving a talk or a poster. That being said, YFT is a very relaxed and inclusive space so why not try out presenting here so you can get some good experience and friendly questions?

Is there a fee associated with this conference?

No, this conference is free to attend. We also provide accommodation and food free of charge whilst you are here. Your own university will have to pay for your travel expenses, however.

I’ve registered for YTF but I can’t attend – what do I do?

Please yet in touch with us as soon as possible (and ideally before 2nd December), you can contact our communications officer Ery McPartland at (ery.j.mcpartland@durham.ac.uk).

If you also signed up to give a talk then please let us know that you can no longer give your talk. This allows us to fix the timetable.

Can you tell me something about ATM?

The YTF committee is not involved with the organisation of ATM. For questions about whether you are able to attend ATM please speak to your supervisor. For other ATM questions, please get in touch with the ATM organisers

I missed the registration deadline, can I still come?

Unfortunately, no. Once we close registration, we immediately send the numbers off to book accommodation for you all. We have purposely left the registration deadline as close to the deadline for accommodation booking as possible, but it does mean that we can’t accept late registrations as we’ll have nowhere for you to stay!

Can I attend YTF virtually?

Unfortunately you can't. YTF contains a mixture of parallel and plenary talks, as well as some sessions that involve many short talks, and so it is logistically quite challenging to stream this conference effectively without negatively effecting the experience of those attending in person (this is a student run conference so we do not have the same access to tech support that other conferences do). It is for this reason that we have unfortunately had to make the decision not to stream this conference.

We apologise for any inconvenience this causes!

Can I submit an abstract without registering?

No, we need everyone attending this conference (including all speakers) to be registered so we know how many people are coming

I am already registered but I missed the deadline for abstract submission – can I still submit an abstract?

Unfortunately, no. It takes a while to prepare the timetable and we can only start doing that once we have the full list of talks
