Accommodation & Getting to the IPPP

Accommodation

Unfortunately, we can not offer accommodation in our colleges to our guests at the time of this workshop. We, therefore, invite attendees to arrange their own accommodation. Durham has a wide selection of hotels available for all budgets and attendees are invited to make their own arrangements for accommodation.

Suggested hotels (depending on your budget, ~most expensive first):

Durham is a very walkable (though hilly!) city, the suggested hotels above are mostly within walking distance of the IPPP. There are also many hotels in the surrounding area which have a good bus connection to Durham city centre (please do check the route to the IPPP before booking!). Details of how to get to the IPPP and the exact location of the workshop are provided below.

How to get the IPPP

The Institute is located in the Ogden Centre for Fundamental Physics, adjacent to the main Physics Department building on the University Science Site. If you are arriving by train it is a 20 minute walk from the railway station to the Department, or you can take a taxi. Google map link here.

How to get to Durham

By Car

Durham is about 30 min. by car south of Newcastle upon Tyne. Find the A1 and leave it at exit Durham. From the south take exit 61 (Bowburn) and follow the A177 to Durham.

By Taxi

If you arrive at either Newcastle International Airport (NCL) or Teesside International Airport (MME), you can take a Taxi directly from the airport. The price should be roughly £50 one-way to Durham (and take about 40-50 minutes).

By Bus

There are bus connections to Durham or Newcastle from most major cities in England.

By Train

The Intercity East-Coast line links Durham with London King's Cross and Edinburgh. Most Intercity trains stop in Durham. Otherwise you have to take a local train or taxi (around £25 one-way) from Newcastle Central station. (You could consider the train from Paris which takes roughly 6 hours.) Timetable information is available from National Rail

By metro/train from the Airport

There is a direct metro link from the airport to the central train station in Newcastle, from which you can take a mainline train directly to Durham. These are very frequent and take 12 minutes. The whole journey takes about 50 minutes.

The airports in Edinburgh and Manchester also have good train connection to Durham. So does London, but the train ride takes considerably longer.
