Getting to Durham: information on how to get to Durham, the IPPP (near the Calman Centre) and Collingwood College by train boat or plane as well as map links is available on this page.
Nearest airports in order of convenience: Newcastle (most convenient), Durham Tees Valley, Edinburgh (airlink + 1hr by train), Manchester. To get to Durham from Newcastle airport the cheapest option is by Metro (you need to choose ticket for zones A+B+C) from the airport to Central Station in Newcastle, and then rail (most trains from Edinburgh to London stop in Durham although you should check it). The fastest option, and also the best option if your plane arrives later than about 9pm, is Uber. It takes 30 mins -- usually there are taxis in the area and it only takes a few minutes to get one. If coming by train please check the train schedule before you arrive; strikes may sometimes disrupt timetables, and are usually announced up to two weeks in advance. Train tickets (including most train travel within Europe) can be conveniently purchased online at the trainline or using their app and the tickets downloaded to your device.
Getting to Collingwood College Accommodation and to the Conference (Calman Centre)
The college is located in the South of the City. If you arrive in Durham by rail, there is a taxi rank on the northbound side of the Station. (If you come from London, Manchester and the South your train will arrive on that side. If you come from Edinburgh, Newcastle and the North your train will arrive on the other side and you will need to cross over using the underpass.) Taxis are cheap in Durham and the ride is 10 minutes. It is also walkable -- 30 minutes. There are College Porters in Collingwood who are there 24 hours a day. When you arrive in College if the porter happens to be away from the reception desk, there will be a contact number on display. The porter will then return to the reception to hand you your key. The Conference (Calman Centre) is a 5-10 minute walk down the hill from Collingwood along this route. For those with mobility constraints there will be shuttle buses in the mornings and evenings to the College and also in to town. More details of these will appear in due course under the "Shuttle Buses" tab.)
Below are printable maps of the locality including the Calman Centre (number 15 on the map) and railway station. Collingwood College is the large building off Hollingside lane in the south. It can be seen on the walking route to the Calman Centre.
