How to get to Durham

By air

Newcastle is the most convenient airport. There is a direct easyJet flight to Geneva during the period of the conference. Other possibilities are Durham airport (but only link is car or taxi) Edinburgh (1.5 hours from Durham by train + 30 minutes airport shuttle) and Manchester (3 hours by direct train from the airport).

By metro/train from the Airport

There is a direct metro link from the airport to the central train station in Newcastle, from which you can take a mainline train south directly to Durham. These are very frequent and take 12 minutes. The whole journey takes about 50 minutes. Durham station is very close (5-10 minutes walk) to the conference hotels.

By Car

Durham is about 30 min. by car south of Newcastle upon Tyne. Find the A1 and leave it at exit Durham. From the south take exit 61 (Bowburn) and follow the A177 to Durham. At the first round about in Durham take a left, take another left at the next traffic light. Drive up the hill and follow the sign for Collingwood college. From the north, take exit 62 (Durham) and drive towards Durham. At the  first round about follow the signs for city center. Take the left exit at the next round about and follow the road straight through the next traffic light and keeping right at the following Y junction. Continue straight at the new Inn pub and look for a sign for collingwood college on the left as you drive up the hill.

By Taxi

If you arrive at the airport, you can take a Taxi directly from the airport. The price should be roughly £45 one-way to Durham (and take about 25 minutes). If you split a taxi between 3 it is about the same as the train/metro.

By Bus

There are bus connections to Durham or Newcastle from most major cities in England.

By Train

The Intercity East-Coast line links Durham with London King's Cross and Edinburgh. Most Intercity trains stop in Durham. Otherwise you have to take a local train or taxi (about 30 GBP) from Newcastle Central station. (You could consider the train from Paris which takes roughly 6-7 hours but is more pleasant than flying.) Timetable information is available from National Rail

The Calman Centre

You may be familiar with the IPPP which is located in the Ogden Centre for Fundamental Physics, behind the main (Rochester) Physics Department building on the University Science Site. The meeting will be in the Calman Centre which is a cylindrical  building to the front and 100m past the Physics building: Calman Learning Centre

If you are arriving by train it is a 20 minute walk from the railway station to the Department, or you can take a taxi. The Calman Centre is number 43 on the University map below while the Ogden Centre is number 12.
